Yoenis Céspedes hit two home runs last night and Aneury Tavárez added another for the Águilas Cibaeñas to regain first place in the 2022-2023 autumn-winter baseball tournament by defeating 7-3 in a match held at the Cibao Stadium.
With his two home runs, Céspedes, who was back in the Águilas lineup, is co-leader in that department along with Kelvin Gutiérrez, from the Gigantes del Cibao; Michael Pérez, from the Águilas, and Wendell Rijo, from the Toros del Este, all with four shots from four corners. The Cuban concluded his good performance with three RBIs. His first home run was a two-run RBI in the fifth inning, while the solo hit it in the sixth. With the victory, the Eagles are in first place in the tournament with a 23-10 record.
On his side, Tavárez’s home run occurred in the eighth episode that produced two rounds. It was the fifth win for the Eagles in seven games against the Lions this season.
The victory went to Julián Fernández (1-0), while the defeat fell to Domingo Tapia (0-1).
The Bulls prevail
At the Francisco Micheli Stadium, in La Romana, Brayan de la Cruz homered in the tenth inning to leave the Estrellas Orientales on the field after defeating them 2-1.
For the Bulls (14-17), it was their second victory in a row and the seventh in the last 10 games, they remain in fourth qualifying position now with a three game advantage over the Stars.
Emailin Montilla (1-0) scored the victory after working a blank entry, while Román Méndez (1-1) left with defeat.
The Bulls were the first to score. They did it in the bottom of the first inning as a result of a single to left field by Miguel Andújar.
In the fifth, the Stars evened the score at one run apiece. Junior Lake hit shortstop and the ball went to center fielder Bryan de la Cruz, which Rainer Núñez took advantage of to score from third base.
The Giants won the first
The Gigantes del Cibao scored a 6-5 victory in the first game of the doubleheader against the Tigres del Licey, during a match held at the Quisqueya Juan Marichal Stadium.
With the match tied at five runs after José Sirí, in the sixth inning, scored from third base on a wild pitch from pitcher Hansel Robles.
With their victory, the Giants consolidate in third place in the baseball tournament with a 16-15 mark, and incidentally achieve their second win against their rival tonight.
Kelvin Gutiérrez, with a home run and two RBIs, and Carlos Paulino, with another two RBIs, were key for the Giants to win. At press time, the Tigers led 5-4 in the seventh inning.
