The DR registers one of the highest diabetes rates in the region

The Dominican Republic faces one of the higher rates of diabetes in the region, with 13.45% of the population affected, according to data from the National Diabetes InstituteEndocrinology and Nutrition (Inden).

Added to this is that 2.35% of Dominicans does not know his conditionwhich increases the probability of serious complications by not receiving timely diagnosis or treatment.

The most recent estimates raise concerns: it is estimated that around one 14% of the population is diagnosed with diabeteswhile a 9.3% is in a condition of prediabetes, evidencing a growing public health problem.

  • These figures place the country among those with the highest prevalence of diabetes in the age group of 20 to 79 years in South and Central America, within the group of 19 nations that make up the region of the International Federation of Diabetes (FID).

Senasa strengthens its response to the increase in cases

Within the framework of the commemoration of the Month of DiabetesNational Health Insurance (Senasa) reaffirmed its commitment to the preventionearly detection and comprehensive care to people living with this disease.

The institution highlighted its strategy aimed at promoting healthy lifestyles, the continuous monitoring and guaranteed access to specialized medical services.

According to a press release, the Senasab Contigo program offers personalized support to 6,936 members with diagnosis of diabetesthrough periodic checkups, glucose monitoringtherapeutic adjustments and monitoring of treatment adherence. For higher risk cases, specific interventions are implemented that seek to maintain glycemic control and prevent complications.

Between January and October 2025, 72,075 members received medical attention for diabetes in the different regimes and plans of SeNaSa. Of the total, 65% correspond to women and 35% to men. During this period, the demand for services generated 675,989 services, with an authorized value that exceeds RD$359.6 million.

By regime, the yessubsidized represented more than RD$119.1 million, the contributive exceeded RD$202.6 million, and the ppensioner lanes and retirees were around RD$37.8 million, the statement said.
