The Dominican Republic has led the world’s per capita death rates from traffic accidents for years. Some years the country tops the list, in others it completes the sad podium in second or third place. According to the World Life Expectancy portal, in 2020 traffic accident deaths were the third leading cause of death in the country behind deaths from heart disease and stroke and one in ten deaths that occurred in the country. It was due to traffic accidents.
With the intention of reducing deaths in traffic accidents the National Institute of Traffic and Land Transport (Intrant) is preparing in the coming months to implement a points system for driver’s licenses. Which would lead a person who commits enough serious offenses in a short time to lose their driver’s license.
The information was revealed during the “Points License Workshop” held by the Intrant and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). officers of the Intrant They recognize that the plan is not an easy task, since they will have to improve the capacities of all the sectors involved in traffic control. From who implements the measure, the Intranteven those who apply them: General Directorate of Traffic Safety and Land Transportation, the Attorney General’s Office and the judiciary.
The project would start no later than 2023.
Traffic agents should be strengthened in teams; acquire the technology that allows traffic violations to be controlled when the agents are not present; strengthen systems to apply the law to those who are always looking for ways to evade it.
However, the goal is not to strip people of their driving documents, but rather to make society respectful of defensive driving and save lives.
How will points be stripped?
This new system grants the driver a balance of 20 or 10 points on his driver’s license, those who have less than four years with a valid driver’s license will be awarded ten points. As they commit traffic violations, their points will be reduced until they reach zero. At that time, the suspension of your license will be processed, which can be recovered through awareness courses and road re-education.
There are a total of 42 infractions that subtract points, regulated in article 7 of the technical regulations of infractions that subtract points.
