Minerd commemorates International Dyslexia Day

On the occasion of commemorating International Dyslexia Day this Tuesday, October 8, the Ministry of Education of the Dominican Republic (Minerd) develops a series of activities with the purpose of raising awareness in the educational community and the country about this condition and other student learning difficulties.

Dyslexia is a learning disorder characterized by difficulty recognizing words, slow and uncertain reading, and poor understanding of written text.

The activities, which take place from October 7 to 11, are organized by the General Directorate of Guidance and Psychology of Minerd, and include encouraging students and teachers from all educational centers to wear some turquoise blue clothing, which is the color that identifies people with dyslexia and sharing murals with information on this topic in different public spaces.

The director of Guidance and Psychology at Minerd, Francisca de la Cruz, reported that next November 10 psychologists and counselors will travel to Spain to do a specialization in the detection of dyslexia.

Although the country does not have statistical data on the number of dyslexic students in the educational system, De la Cruz indicated that educational centers make systematic efforts to support students. children who demonstrate the disorder with the help of tutors or specialized education programs.

He recalled that Minerd signed an agreement last year with the Dyslexia and Family Association (Dispam) in order to promote the educational quality of students who have dyslexia and other specific learning difficulties.

The cooperation agreement was signed by the Minister of Education, Ángel Hernández, and Iñaki Muñoz Salas, with the aim of detecting children with this condition in time in order to accompany them and work from selected schools in the 18 Educational Regional Areas of the country to that they can deploy all their capacities and potentialities.

He said that so far this year, the training and awareness program has been offered to both national and regional and district technicians.

“266 technicians from the area of ​​Guidance and Psychology were trained, who were offered instructions on the protocols for the early detection of students who present signs of dyslexia and other learning difficulties, with the aim of reducing school dropouts,” De specified. the Cross.
