Teachers from the border protested on Saturday, January 21, in the seventh stage of the Vuelta al Táchira en Bicicleta to demand salary improvements.
With the phrase “the dollar rises, hunger grows”, the teachers shouted slogans in the Vial of the San Antonio del Táchira Cemetery, a space through which the cyclists passed.
“The teaching profession and health united for a decent salary” is another of the phrases that the teachers put forward in their peaceful demonstration.
Teachers from all over the country have been protesting since the beginning of January to demand salary improvements and the debts that the Executive has maintained since March 2022 after the application of the Onapre instructions, which lowered the amount of premiums and other contractual benefits.
The health sector joined the protest this week, which also demands a significant improvement in wages. According to the Venezuelan Observatory of Social Conflict, at least 20 protests are registered daily throughout the country regarding salary claims by the health and education sectors.
Part of the problem faced by teachers who go out to protest is that in several schools they are taking minutes to prevent them from going to complain. This has been a complaint made by Edgar Machado, leader of the National Union of Teachers, who has also rejected the presence of collective groups in their peaceful demonstrations.
