Oaxaca, Oax., Juan Carlos Fabián, director of the news portal El Sol de Tonameca, was attacked by a subject who was carrying a firearm, who was subdued and handed over to the authorities. The communicator stressed that despite the fact that he was the victim of the attack, the Public Ministry did not take a statement from him.
Carlos Fabián narrated that on Tuesday night he was at his mother’s house and her partner, in the municipality of Santa María Tonameca -located in the Costa region-, and a couple of subjects who drank beer and talked about politics entered the home , one of them approached him and asked if he was recording it, to which he replied that he was not.
Next, the individual, whom the reporter identified as Armando V., pulled out a firearm. His mother’s partner intervened and struggled with the assailant, who fired five shots; One hit the leg of Juan Carlos’s parent’s partner but those present controlled it and the municipal police arrested the subject.
Later, the Public Ministry took a statement from the wounded, but not from the communicator, who offered his deposition this Thursday, two days after the incident.
This was the third attack on a journalist in Oaxaca during 2022. The first occurred on January 26, against José Ignacio Santiago, founder and director of Pluma Digital Noticias, who was unharmed; the second was the homicide of the director of the news website Noticias Web, Heber López, assassinated on February 10 in the municipality of Salina Cruz.
