"The dictatorship failed": Guaidó celebrates the ICC's decision to continue investigating crimes against humanity in Venezuela

Guaido

Juan Guaidó celebrated the decision of the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Karim Khan, who dismissed the request for postponement presented by the government of Nicolás Maduro, which was trying to stop the investigation for crimes against humanity.

Guaidó on ICC decision

“The request by the ICC Prosecutor, Karim Khan, to continue the investigation into crimes against humanity committed in Venezuela, vindicates the work of the victims, their representatives and civil society on the path to achieving justice”, he pointed Guaido.

And he stated: “The dictatorship failed in its attempt to simulate justice. We trust that there will be no impunity because only in this way will compensation be achieved for the victims and the non-repetition of the events will be guaranteed. May this further encourage our struggle for justice, freedom and democracy.

deferment request

The Venezuelan State had until April 16 to submit to the ICC the documentation that would certify that internal procedures were advancing to investigate and punish human rights violations in the country.

However, the Maduro government asked the ICC Prosecutor’s Office “to formally refrain from the investigation in favor of the actions carried out by the competent national authorities of Venezuela.”

To which the prosecutor responded: “Given that no new information appears to have been submitted that would justify revising its previous determination, the Prosecution’s previous assessment of complementarity is not affected by the request for adjournment. Consequently, and as soon as possible, the Prosecutor’s Office will request the Chamber to authorize the resumption of its investigation”.
