10% of the food produced in Uruguay ends up in the trash, that is equivalent to one million tons of food per year.
The deputy of the Colorado Party for the department of Colonia, Ms. Nibia Reisch, is giving strong impetus in the Health Commission of the House of Representatives, to a bill that seeks that these foods are used in some way.
The initiative, which was presented by Senator Adrián Peña, with contributions from the Executive Branch, has been approved by the Senate and is now being debated in the House of Representatives.
The objective is to encourage companies from all over the country to donate food that they are not going to use so that it can be used in nursing homes, children’s homes and picnic areas.
Currently there are only 28 companies that have an agreement with the Food Bank to donate groceries. These are distributed to 109 institutions, the majority in the metropolitan area, benefiting some 47,000 people.
This initiative seeks to multiply that number of donor companies and extend the benefit to institutions throughout the country, including the department of Colonia.
The proposal has interesting tax benefits for participating companies such as the application of 0% IMESI and the VAT discount on donated products.
