The death toll in the protests in Peru rises to 22

The identities of all the victims have not been provided, but at least three of them were minors.

At least two more protesters died this Friday in clashes with the Police in the Peruvian department of Junín (center), bringing the total number of fatalities in the protests calling for the closure of Congress and the resignation of the president, Dina Boluarte, which have been taking place since Sunday, amounts to 22.

The Junín Regional Health Directorate confirmed on Friday night that a total of three civilians have died, “as a result of the clashes that occurred in (the) Pichanaki district during the day,” events that have also left 52 injured, of which 43 are protesters and nine are police officers.

These three victims are added to the six from Apurímac, the three from La Libertad, the eight from Ayacucho, the one from Arequipa, and the one from Cuzco.

So far, they have not been provided the identities of all the victims, but at least three of them were minors.

This Friday morning, the Ministry of Health announced that 63 people remain hospitalized after the protests that took place in various parts of the country.

Of these26 are in Ayacucho, in the south of the country, where this Thursday protesters tried to take over the airport, which caused the military to open fire on them, as can be seen in numerous videos posted on social networks.

The Regional Directorate of Health of Ayacucho pointed out that “The 410 health establishments and support hospitals in the region are on red alertin order to guarantee the presence of personnel, the provision of medical supplies and the timely care of patients”.

The protests that began to intensify this Sunday demand the closure of Congress, the resignation of Boluarte and the convening of a constituent assembly, among other demands.

The Government of Boluarte decreed this Wednesday the state of emergency at the national level for 30 days to control the acts of vandalism and violence committed in the demonstrations and this Thursday a curfew was decreed in 15 provinces of eight departments.

“I’m sorry for the tragic events that have claimed the lives of several compatriots in various regions of the country. This has to stop,” Boluarte emphasized this Friday at a graduation ceremony for officers from the Chorrillos Military School.

The president summoned the leaders of the Catholic, Christian and evangelical churches to set up a dialogue table in each of the regions that have mobilized, in order to open spaces to call the representatives who lead the marches to listen to their demands and channel them. .
