Santo Domingo.- At least 18 people have died in the Dominican Republic during the festivity of the Good night and the early hours of this Christmas Sunday as a result of 77 traffic accidents in various parts of the country, reported the National Emergency Center (EOC).
“Seventy-seven traffic accidents have been recorded during operations on highways, highways, streets and avenues. Eighteen people died, of this total, nine occurred within the road safety device and nine outside it,” explained Juan Manuel Méndez, director of the COE, during a press conference.
Méndez assured that the majority of cases were in Greater Santo Domingo (National District and Santo Domingo province), La Vega, Puerto Plata and Dajabón.

When announcing the second bulletin of phase one of the Christmas operation “Awareness for Life, Christmas and New Year 2022-2023”, Méndez said that some 1,272 people received medical assistance, 226 people were treated for alcohol poisoning, including 11 minors, and another 49 for food poisoning.
Regarding the accidents, the director of the COE specified that the majority took place in the early hours of this Sunday and in some 57 crashes motorcycles were involved.
In addition, in that second bulletin, the COE specified that on Christmas Eve 2,780 people were assisted on the roads who suffered breakdowns for various reasons, including flat tires, mechanical or fuel failures.
The agency indicated that these assistances were carried out by the Ministry of Public Health (MSP), the Military and Police Commission of the Ministry of Public Works (MOPC), the General Directorate of Traffic Safety and Land Transportation (Digesett), the National Institute of Transit and Land Transport (Intrant), the National Health Service (SNS) and the Civil Defense (DC).
