The President of the Republic, Luis Abinader, will give this Sunday the first punch for the construction of the perimeter fence in the Dajabón province, which will open a new chapter in Dominican-Haitian relations.
According to the Government, the Head of State will begin the act at 1:30 in the afternoon.
During his accountability before the National Assembly on February 27, 2021, Abinader had surprised the nation with the announcement of the construction “on the dividing line between the Dominican Republic and Haiti of a double perimeter fence.”
By March of that same year, the president assured that the construction of the wall on the border was in planning and that the government has the budget for its construction.
By May, Abinader authorized the Ministry of Defense by decree to carry out emergency purchases and contracts for its construction. 23 kilometers had already been completed in Jimaní and Elías Piña.
According to said decree, which is 276-21, signed on April 26 and which was not made known by the Presidency of the Republic, this declaration was made for national security and would have a duration of 12 months from its issuance, so it should end on April 26 this year.
With the construction of the wall between the Dominican Republic and Haiti, the government has said that “within two years, the serious problems of illegal immigration, drug trafficking and transit of stolen vehicles that we have suffered for years will be put to an end and the protection of our territorial integrity that we have been seeking since our independence”, according to the words of the president in his appearance before the legislators in 2021.
