The day Jimmy Carter received the National Medal from the Ombudsman’s Office

Jimmy Carterformer president of the United States and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002, died on Sunday at the age of 100 and the tributes have not stopped for his committed defense of democracy and human rights.

On April 30, 2009, Carter received the National Medal from the Peruvian Ombudsman’s Office in April 2009. This recognition was granted as a token of gratitude for his outstanding work in the defense of human rights, the promotion of peace and the fight against inequality in Latin America and the world.

The tribute was at the National Library of Peru, and was led by the then ombudsman Beatriz Merino.

Various personalities from the political, social and cultural sphere participated.

The defense office highlighted that Carter’s career “reflects an option devoted to the promotion of dialogue as a basic instrument of social understanding, as proven by the resounding international achievements in which he had a decisive participation.”

Carter’s efforts in the reestablishment of democracy in Nicaragua, the signing of the peace agreement between Egypt and Israel and the ceasefire obtained in Haiti and Bosnia in 1995, among other achievements, were also highlighted.

The defense highlighted that the former US president embodies the values ​​that democracy represents, which motivated the founding of the Carter Center.

Through the Carter Center, founded in 1982, Jimmy Carter actively worked on conflict resolution, monitoring democratic elections, and promoting social justice in countries around the world.

Its center has participated as an observer in electoral processes in Latin America, including Peru, ensuring transparency and promoting solid democratic systems.

Carter advocated for sustainable development programs, seeking to close social and economic gaps in vulnerable regions.

The ceremony not only honored Carter’s career, but also reaffirmed the ties of cooperation and solidarity between Peru and the United States on issues of human rights and democracy.
