Due to the increase in food costs in the second half of 2021, the start of the war between Russia and Ukraine that once again increased the prices of grains and also the value of fertilizers and fuels, the tamberos Argentines request a meeting with the Government.
Specifically the representatives of the dairy sector, the tamberos of the country, requested through a letter, a meeting with the Secretary of Agriculture, Juan José Bahillo, arguing that the previously mentioned factors, plus the drought that devastates our territory, and the increases in the salaries of the dairy farmers rose below headline inflation.
The executive director of the Observatory of the Argentine Dairy Chain (OCLA), Jorge Giraudo, mentioned that the situation of the tamberos It couldn’t get any worse, they are working on the “worst evil”.
In his words: “Today the sector is producing in the worst of evils. It is affected by a combo made up of a terrible drought that caused the existing forage reserves to be consumed. Likewise, due to the lack of water, new reserves cannot be made, there is no grass because it does not rain”.
For its part, the dairy cooperative, Conaprole, informed the national government that by 2023, it must execute temporary and partial closures in certain plants, in order to seek greater efficiency for seasonal productivity.
The leader of the Association of Tamberos de Canelones, Justino Zabala, He told the press that it is a normal tactic to fix strategic production points when preparing for the annual production peak due to the season.
The measures requested by the tamberos
In the letter to Bahillo, the dairy farmers asked for that a “weekly or fortnightly settlement and payment system” be implemented (which is currently monthly) and promote the use of the invoice for the dairy transaction.
They also claim that DNU 579/2022 and 787/2022 have a negative impact because they do not distinguish the size of the dairy business and use the same business formats and structures for all.
