The current patriarchal system is the true cause of violence against women

Gender-based violence refers to any form of physical, sexual, psychological and / or economic abuse against a person for reasons of their gender.

Although all people are at risk of being victims of gender-based violence, the people most at risk of experiencing this type of violence are women or girls, especially indigenous, migrant, refugee, and disabled women, among other conditions.

Montserrat Miranda, communication officer and Strategic Alliances of HIAS Panama, referred this Wednesday morning to the issue of violence against women, in order to make a call for awareness and to know the true causes of this problem.

According to Miranda, the true cause of this situation is the patriarchal system that maintains gender roles and puts women at a disadvantage.

He stressed that the moment in which the victim denounces is crucial for them to receive real protection, alluding to domestic violence. “Many of the protection measures or the moments in which the victims dare to report, is when they reach the extreme of physical violence,” he said.
