The Currency of Regrets: Minister Jackson apologizes for sayings about the generation “that precedes them”

The Minister of the General Secretariat of the Presidency (Segpres), Giorgio Jackson, apologized to those affected by his statements issued, where he distanced the Government of President Gabriel Boric from the generation “that preceded them”, in what becomes a new apology from the Palacio de La Moneda in less than a week, when last Friday the Minister of the Interior, Izkia Siches, apologized to the deputies for telling them that they had “hit each other on the head”.

In a live broadcast through the Twitch platform, the portfolio holder stated that “our scale of values and principles around politics is not only far from the previous government, but I think that compared to a generation that preceded us, that could be identified with the same range of the political spectrum, such as the center left and the left, I think we are approaching the issues with less euphemism and more frankly”.

For his statements, Minister Jackson earned various criticisms from the ruling party and the opposition, such as that of the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Raúl Soto (PPD), who took to his social networks to send a message to President Gabriel Boric reminding a phrase from the speech that the parliamentarian gave in his public account in charge of the head of the Lower House, in which he alluded to the fact that both were from “the same generation that had to assume leadership positions before what many had predicted”.

After the criticism, the minister published a letter and used his social networks, such as his official Twitter account, to apologize: “I expressed myself badly about some political ideas. Therefore, I want to offer sincere apologies to those who, justifiably, felt offended.”

“I tried to explain that our government (both coalitions) is obviously very far from the previous administration in the values of society that we defend. And that the challenges of our times require us more than before, which means critically reviewing what has been done in the past”, he added.

However, “this is only possible with the combination of different experiences working together”.

“Obviously politics does not start with us. And my commitment is to the unity of all the transforming forces, learning from the mistakes and successes of those who came before us”, she concluded.

President Boric and ministers stand out

Hours before his rectification, President Gabriel Boric told Mega that “there is no desire to claim superiority”.

“I think what Giorgio was referring to is that we live in different times, neither better nor worse, different times,” he added, to emphasize that “here we have to learn from those who preceded us, in no case superiority.”

“I have talked a lot with Giorgio about this and I have no doubt that there is no intention to claim superiority,” he said.

Interior Minister Izkia Siches and Defense Minister Maya Fernández also stood out. The chief of staff expressed that, in her opinion, “we must take the words that our president has said: we leave this government on the shoulders of giants.”

In this way, Siches indicated that the administration of President Boric “is made up of multiple generations, diverse political perspectives that seek to contribute to the development of the country, but, without a doubt, we also have the duty to learn from the successes and mistakes, not from the generations, but from previous governments to challenge us to do better.”

“I stay with what President Gabriel Boric has permanently raised about joint construction. We are part of this government, we are working, we want the best for the country and I think that is what is important”, answered Minister Fernández on the other hand.
