On the afternoon of Tuesday, October 11, the wake of the 68-year-old woman was held at the Los Teques Municipal Funeral Home. One of her four children, the commissioner of Polimiranda, Rony Soto, arranged a chair next to the coffin to feel close to his mother.

“Everyone knew her, she lived with me, I saw her every day. My mother was not spared from this tragedy,” Soto said. At the time the landslide broke out, Yolanda was alone in her house and according to the testimony of her neighbors, she was one of the dozens of people dragged by the force of the current.

The woman’s body was found the next day. “Next Sunday she turned 69, we already had her party planned for her, we would bring her to Los Teques to celebrate with my cousin, who would also have a birthday,” explained her son.

Soto indicated that his father was also a Polimiranda official and a well-known character in the area, who died five years ago. «Because of him they called my mother the police station. In the end, after her death, the two of them were reunited ». In addition to her collaborative spirit, Yolanda Margarita was highly sought after in that area of ​​Las Tejerías since she knew how to inject and, as they reminded her, whenever she went she was willing to provide the service.

While the official spoke about his mother, a group of relatives who were in the same room commented on how difficult it will be to recover from the tragedy, they reported that the victim’s home was left uninhabitable. “This situation affected the entire country, people on the street feel bad as if they were the ones who lost a house or a loved one, it is a true national tragedy,” commented one of the relatives.

The Castor Nieves Ríos sector was one of the most affected by the disaster. Many of the neighbors did not have time to leave their homes since the entrances faced the same alley, which was flooded by the current in less than five minutes.

As best they could, they climbed onto the roofs of their homes and received help, initially, from neighbors who had properties with two or three floors.
