The Cuban Government blames the US and NATO for Russia's invasion of Ukraine

(EFE).- Cuba on Saturday blamed the United States and NATO for the increase in tensions with Russia that in its opinion has caused the current war in Ukraine and advocated a “serious, constructive and realistic diplomatic solution to the current crisis in Europe”.

“The US effort to continue the progressive expansion of NATO towards the borders of the Russian Federation has led to a scenario, with implications of unpredictable scope, which could be avoided,” the Cuban Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The Cuban government highlighted the “close relationship with the Ukrainian people” and also lamented the loss of life of innocent civilians due to the war.

Havana considered “just” the “claims” made by Moscow to Washington and the countries of the Atlantic alliance in the face of the military deployment in regions “adjacent” to Russia and “the delivery of modern weapons to Ukraine.”

This overall picture is equivalent to a “progressive military siege,” said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which took a position for the first time on the war in Ukraine

This overall picture is equivalent to a “progressive military siege,” said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which took a position for the first time on the war in Ukraine on the third day of the Russian invasion and in the midst of heavy fighting in Ukraine.

“History will hold the United States Government accountable for the consequences of an increasingly offensive military doctrine outside NATO’s borders, which threatens international peace, security and stability,” the text added.

Cuba advocated a “serious, constructive and realistic diplomatic solution to the current crisis in Europe, by peaceful means, which guarantees the security and sovereignty of all, as well as regional and international peace, stability and security.”

He also expressed his concern with NATO’s decision to activate its Response Force for the first time.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday ordered his troops to advance in all directions after a three-day military offensive in Ukraine.

Putin also accused Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky of refusing to sit down to negotiate under his terms to stop the war.

In this context, Havana described this Saturday as an “error” to “ignore for decades the well-founded demands for security guarantees by the Russian Federation and assume that that country would remain defenseless in the face of a direct threat to its national security.”

“Russia has the right to defend itself,” stressed the Government of Cuba, which has not recognized the republics of Donetsk and Luhansk, and maintains its support for Moscow

“Russia has the right to defend itself,” stressed the Government of Cuba, which has not recognized the republics of Donetsk and Luhansk, and maintains its support for Moscow in its tensions with Washington and Western powers.

Havana and Moscow have boosted their ties in recent years in an attempt to return to the close cooperation they had before the disappearance of the Soviet Union in 1991.

Russia is one of Cuba’s top 10 trading partners, and both define their partnership as “strategic.”
