The Cuban Alberto Juantorena in full recovery

Two-time Olympic champion and Cuban sports legend Alberto Juantorena is recovering at home after spending several days hospitalized for dengue and bronchopneumonia, a sports publication on the island reported this Friday.

«Already at home Alberto Juantorena! This is, without a doubt, a special victory. He runs with his heart, he runs for glory but nothing is as significant as when he runs for life and wins. Congratulations, we all continue to send good vibes,” Deporcuba magazine wrote on its Facebook profile.

The publication is accompanied by a photo of the 71-year-old former athlete and president of the Cuban Athletics Federation.

Juantorena left the Pedro Kourí Institute of Tropical Medicine (IPK) in Havana a week ago, where he was hospitalized for several days for dengue and bronchopneumonia, to which were added the consequences of covid-19.

The former athlete is the only Cuban athlete to win two Olympic gold medals, in the 400 and 800 meter dash at the 1976 Montreal Games.

Juantorena retired from the tracks after participating in the World Cup in Helsinki in 1983, where he suffered a foot injury and was unable to finish the competition.

Among the awards received for his successful sports career, he was included in the Hall of Fame of the International Association of Athletics Federations and in 2021 the World Athletics gave him the Plaque of Merit. EFE
