The crisis hits the official press hard: 'Granma' will be printed only once a week

Havana/The official newspapers of the Cuban Government, including Granmabegin to be printed only once a week and the paper publication of the provincial state newspapers is completely suspended due to the unprecedented energy crisis suffered by the Island, a hard blow to the propaganda gear of the Havana regime.

The Cuban state media themselves reported this Saturday of the decision, adopted by the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, which uses as an excuse “the tightening of the US Government’s blockade.”

The publication explains that the newspapers Granmaofficial organ of the Communist Party, and Rebel Youth They will be printed and distributed, in eight-page format, only on Tuesdays, starting next week.

In addition, regional newspapers – already with limited periodicity – will “stop printing” for the moment. Each of the 14 provinces of Cuba has a regional written publication of a state nature.

The impact of the current crisis “on the availability of fuel” is the main argument that the authorities have used for this cut. The lack of oil not only affects the printing of newspapers, but also their transportation to distribution centers and stores throughout the country.

Something similar has happened with several provincial radio stations that have had to go off the air or modify their programming due to prolonged daily blackouts that hinder and damage the stations’ equipment and have made their existence unsustainable. Such is the case of Radio Sancti Spíritus and Radio Ángulo.

The situation in Cuba has deteriorated enormously in recent weeks after the capture, by the US Government, of Nicolás Maduro and the threat of tariffs on countries that supply oil to the Havana regime. Although the energy crisis had worsened before. Miguel Díaz-Canel himself acknowledged on February 5 that the country had not received oil since last December.

The starting point was already worrying, since the Island had suffered six years of serious economic crisis, with a cumulative loss of more than 15% of its gross domestic product and more than 20% of its population.

Currently, gas stations are practically out of stock, hospitals are suspending basic treatments and operating with minimal services, public transportation is basically disappeared, garbage is piling up in the streets due to lack of fuel for trucks, and food prices are skyrocketing.
