The Excellence in Justice Corporation (CEJ)released the fifth version of its ‘Crime Clock’which discusses the insecurity situation in Colombia and the most common crimes committed in the country during the first half of 2024.

Sexual crimes increased by 53%
According to the information system Siedcoof the National Policewere registered 15,656 cases of sexual crimes, a crime that increased by 53% compared to the same period in 2023.

The report highlights three critical moments in the commission of these crimes: 0:00 am, at 0:59 am; from 10:00 am to 10:59 am and from 3:00 pm, giving special attention to the first hour of the day, when more cases occur compared to the average of all hours, exceeding them by 219%
Domestic violence increased by 55%
During the first half of 2024, there were registered 20,772 cases of domestic violence in the countrythat is, an average of 446 cases per daywhich corresponded to One incident every three minutes, an increase of 55% compared to the same period last year.

According to the police, 74% of the victims are women, with 74% and, as in the case of sexual crimes,the highest incidence occurs in the first hour of the day (0:00 am to 0:59 am), since more cases were reported compared to the average for all hours, by 124%.
Extortion, on the order of the day
With an increase of 13% compared to the same period last year, In the first six months of the year, 5,972 cases of extortion were recorded in the countrythat is, an average of 33 cases per day, or one case every 44 minutes.

According to the report, the majority of extortion victims in the country were men. The main methods used to carry out extortion were telephone calls (43.5%), direct extortion (24.1%), social networks (15.6%) and extortion letters (5.2%)..
As in the two previous cases, the highest incidence occurs in the first hour of the day, being 135% above the average for all hours of the day in the first half of the year.
