Dr. Arturo Coley Graham, professor at the Faculty of Social Communication at the University of Panama, and diplomat Roger González Martínez recently presented to the Office of Citizen Participation of the National Assembly the citizen initiative for the creation of the “ATHEYNA BYLON” award for all athletes who participate in the Olympic Games.
The main reason that led Mr. Coley and Mr. González to present this proposal to the honorable National Assembly was the historic feat achieved by Panamanian boxer Atheyna Bylon at the last Olympic Games in Paris 2024, where she won a silver medal in the final of the 75-kilogram category of women’s boxing, becoming the first Panamanian woman to climb the Olympic podium. This sporting milestone must be immortalized and, in this way, serve as an inspiration to future generations who dream of representing Panama in these great multi-sport events.
“Bylon has made history, just like Lloyd LaBeach in 1948 and Irving Saladino in 2008, so we consider it important to highlight the achievements of this extraordinary boxer, who has brought glory to Panama. Therefore, we hope to count on the full support of the members of Congress,” said Coley Graham.
For his part, diplomat González said: “Bylon is a sports ambassador whose Olympic medal makes her a living legend and, with the passage of time, we will see the great dimension that this feat acquires for our country and, above all, for women’s sport,” he noted.
