This week the trend towards a decrease in COVID-19 cases has been consolidating, in just two days there were more than a thousand, but we have to continue caring for people with certain situations of vulnerability, especially the sick elderly.
The First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, reiterated being alert to the risk of late arrival at the hospital care system of elderly people positive for SARS-CoV-2 virus with complications.
The president made the call at this Saturday’s meeting of the Government’s temporary working group for the prevention and control of the pandemic, where he pointed out that these incidents are the ones that are most influencing the level of deaths from the disease, although It is not high, it is necessary to decrease, he claimed.
Very old people are dying with a group of complications, and we must prevent them from running these risks, and in this, he said, the measures taken in the primary care system have a great influence, where the family doctor must visit them systematically to determine if there are any cases with these complexities.
When carrying out an evaluation of the COVID-19 epidemic in Cuba at the present time, when control is being gained, Díaz-Canel stressed that these results are closely linked to the effectiveness of Cuban vaccines and the immunization of the population, including under conditions of the presence of the Omicron variant.
In the world, in most countries, the peak caused by this strain has even exceeded the previous ones; however, in Cuba it has fallen far short of what we previously had, the First Secretary emphasized.
This is another demonstration that the country’s strategy to develop our vaccines and immunize the population has been effective, added Díaz-Canel, who requested, however, to continue accompanying the good results with measures to prevent people with vulnerabilities from reaching the serious or critical stage.
“This is what we have to focus on now,” said the President of the Republic at the Saturday meeting of the Temporary Government Working Group, which interacted through videoconference with political and government authorities from the 15 provinces and the special municipality Isle of Youth.
Today the country, Díaz-Canel reflected, remains under the new normality, has fewer restrictions than at other times, the school year continues, and economic activity is developing and reactivating, and I think that is how we should continue working, he stated. .
In the exchange, which had as its axis, as usual, a presentation by the head of Public Health, José Ángel Portal Miranda, it was proposed, and approved, to eliminate the mandatory quarantine measure for travelers from South Africa, Lesotho, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Namibia, Malawi and Eswatini.
The decision, argued Portal Miranda, is based on the current global epidemiological situation and particularly in Cuba. For travelers from those countries, the mandatory taking of samples at the entrance to our ports and airports is also exempt, and they will be governed by the protocols that apply to those who arrive from other places.
The meeting of the Temporary Working Group of the Government was attended by the member of the Secretariat of the Central Committee, Jorge Luis Broche Lorenzo, and the Deputy Prime Ministers Inés María Chapman Waugh, Ricardo Cabrisas Ruiz, Alejandro Gil Fernández, and Jorge Luis Perdomo Di-Lella, in addition to of chiefs and heads of portfolios, and other authorities.
