Santo Domingo.-President Luis Abinader received the document “Strengthen social protection to eradicate poverty and move towards inclusive social development in the Dominican Republic”, prepared by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), in coordination with the Directorate of Social Development Suprate, as part of the technical accompaniment provided to the Dominican government for the strengthening of its social protection system.
During the presentation, ECLAC stressed that the Dominican Republic has maintained an average economic growth of 5 % in the last decade, more than double the regional average, and has managed to reduce poverty to 18.2 % and extreme poverty to 4.9 %, also reaching the index of inequality (Gini) lower in Latin America in 2023 (0.39).
The document proposes three strategic public policy lines to consolidate these advances. The first is to expand and strengthen the social protection system towards a universal, comprehensive, sustainable and resilient model.
It is followed by promoting active employment policies and labor inclusion, with special attention to young people, women and informal workers. Finally, reinforce social institutionality, advancing towards a social protection framework and a better intersectoral articulation.
The general director Gloria Reyes said that the report constitutes a key tool for making public policy decision, reflecting the evolution of the Dominican system and social investment opportunities to reduce inequality and poverty gaps.
President Abinader thanked ECLAC’s technical support and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening social protection.
