The cost of the basic food basket increased 4.6% in May

The Consumer Price Index registered a rise of 6.7% in March

The basic food basket rose 4.5%.

The cost of basic food basket (CBA) went up 4.6% in Mayor, so a family group made up of two adults and two minors needed to receive an income of $44,498.60 to avoid falling into poverty, the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (Indec) reported on Tuesday.

For its part, the cost of the total basic basket (CBT), which in addition to food includes clothing and transportation, also rose 4.6% in May, for which the same family group needed to have income from $98,676.85 to stay below the poverty line.

In this way, in the first five months of the year the total basket accumulated an increase of 30.9%, while the food basket rose 35%, compared to general inflation of 29.3% in the same period.

Meanwhile, in the last twelve months, the cost of the CBA advanced 62.3% and the CBT 54.7%.

In this same period, the consumer price index at a general level accumulated an advance of 60.7%, according to the numbers reported by the AFIP.

President Alberto Fernandezin statements made this Tuesday morning, said that “structural poverty grew again after the government of (Mauricio) Macri and we went to support the most vulnerable.”

In this framework, the head of state expressed his gratitude “to the Social Organizations that they were by our side helping us to definitively contain those most vulnerable sectors bringing solidarity where solidarity did not exist, bringing commitment where it did exist”.

At the end of last year, 37.3% of the population was below the poverty line, against 42% registered in the second half of 2020, amid the measures promoted to moderate the advance of the first wave of coronavirus in the country.

Between both measurements, the economy grew 10.3% in 2021, with which it was able to recover from the 9.9% drop in 2020.

In May, the general consumer price index marked an increase of 5.1%.

During the fifth month of the current year, the item with the highest increase was Health, with 6.2%, in which the increase in the share of prepaid medicine stood out for its incidence; followed by Transportation with 6.1%, due to the increase in fuels; and in third place Food and non-alcoholic beverages, with 4.4%, which was the item that had the highest incidence in all regions of the country.

Meanwhile, Clothing and footwear increased 5.8% during May, against the 9.9% registered during April; Restaurants and hotels also reduced their inflation rate to 5.7% in May from 7.3% last month; and Alcoholic beverages and tobacco increased 5.7% monthly against 3.3% in the previous month.

Specifically, the Food and non-alcoholic beverages item registered an increase of 4.4%, the lowest increase so far this year, after the strong advances verified from February and March, when the greatest impact of commodity shocks due to the drought in South America and the war in Ukraine.
