Its republican architecture is inheritance of its past.
News Colombia.
Facatativá, a municipality located only 36 kilometers to the west of Bogotá, is today recognized for its historical value, its industrial development and its proximity to the capital of the country. However, few remember that this Cundinamarqués town held an important title in the past: it was the capital of the former Western department.

This category was obtained in 1905, when the then President Rafael Reyes territorially reorder the country and created several new departments. Among them was the Department of the West, whose capital was Facatativá for a short but significant period. The decision responded in part to the strategic, economic and geographical importance that the municipality had at that time.
During that time, Facatativá lived an administrative and economic boom, with the installation of government offices and the growth of its infrastructure. In addition, its proximity to the railway layout made it a key point for trade and mobility between the Cundiboyacense highlands and the west of the country.
However, this departmental capital status lasted just two years. In 1907, with the dissolution of the Department of the West and the territorial reorganization that again centralize power in Bogotá, Facatativá returned to its status of municipality. Despite this, the memory of that time is still alive in the historical archives and in the memory of some inhabitants.
Today, Facatativá retains vestiges of this historical relevance. Its republican architecture, some institutional buildings and their strong cultural identity are inheritance of its past as an administrative center. In addition, it continues to be a key municipality in the Sabana Occidente region, with an important industrial, educational and commercial activity.
Although many know him for his tourist attractions such as the Archaeological Park of Piedras del Tunjo, Facatativá keeps a little known chapter in its history that distinguishes it among the peoples of Colombia. Having been the capital of an apartment is a silent pride that still accompanies this land of fog and memory.
