The COE keeps provinces on alert due to flood risk

El COE mantiene provincias en alerta por riesgo de inundaciones

The Emergency Operations Center (COE) has maintained alert levels in much of the national territory due to the indirect effects and trajectory of Tropical Storm Melissa, the 13th phenomenon of the cyclonic season.

The most recent COE bulletin reports that a total of 9 provinces are in Red Alert, 13 in Yellow and 3 in Green, due to the threat of sudden floods, river flooding and landslides.

According to the National Institute of Meteorology (INDOMET), Tropical Storm Melissa was located approximately 485 kilometers southwest of Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Currently, it is moving slowly west/northwest at a speed of 6 km/h, with maximum sustained winds of about 85 km/h.

Although its movement is slow, the storm is expected to begin moving towards the northwest and north/northwest in the coming days, with gradual strengthening forecast.

The nine provinces under the Red Alert level, which indicates a high probability of damage to people and infrastructure, include: Barahona, San Cristóbal, Santo Domingo Province, National District, San José de Ocoa, Peravia, Pedernales, Azua and San Juan. This preventive measure seeks to mitigate the risks associated with heavy downpours and gusts of wind that affect the area.
