The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) issued, this Tuesday (24), a warning of great danger for the southeast region of the country due to the accumulation of rain. The passage of a cold front will create favorable conditions for continuous rain until Friday (27).
In the state of São Paulo, most of the territory will have a dry and stable climate, except for the coastal region, which should experience regular rainfall and accumulations of more than 50 millimeters (mm).
According to the state’s Civil Defense, the risks posed by rain are very high in the regions of Vale do Ribeira, Baixada Santista, and the South and North Coast. The cities of Peruíbe and Ubatuba, already badly hit by rain in recent days, remain at risk.
THE alert of great danger also applies to Itapeva, Sorocaba, Campinas, Serra da Mantiqueira, Vale da Paraíba, Capital and Metropolitan Region of São Paulo.
Climatic conditions in the regions increase the risk of flooding and river overflows, as well as landslides. In these cases, Inmet instructs the population to carefully observe changes in the slopes, remain in a safe place and turn off electrical devices.
In case of flooding in your home, or similar situation, it is recommended to protect your belongings from the water by wrapping them in plastic bags, if possible.
Calamity
This past week, the accumulation of rain generated enormous complications in the state of São Paulo, especially on the coast. In Peruíbe, more than 300 people were left homeless and another 100 were displaced after the municipality reached 56 millimeters (mm) of accumulated water in 12 hours.
Last Monday (23), Mongaguá had around 800 properties affected by rivers overflowing and flooding of several streets. In Ubatuba, two people died in a shipwreck due to adverse weather, which recorded a volume of rain equivalent to the historical average for the entire month of February.
Also on Monday, the Oswaldo Cruz and Tamoios Highways had sections closed due to objects falling on the road and excessive rain, which exceeded 100 mm.
Danger in Minas and Espírito Santo
In the central-western regions of the states of Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo, rainfall may exceed 200mm in the coming days. People from Espírito Santo and Minas Gerais should be careful between the 25th and 27th, when the volume of water will intensify.
