The National Hydrocarbons Commission (CNH) is investigating the state oil company Pemex for suspicion of excessive burning of natural gas as well as other violations at another giant oil field, according to two sources with direct knowledge of the matter.
In 2019, the company, which is under international pressure to clean up its operating practices, praised the field cheesecake in the state of Tabasco as the most important energy discovery in the region in three decades.
Experts from Mexico’s hydrocarbons regulator paid a surprise visit to the site on Tuesday, the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly, told Reuters.
Concerns centered on “excessive gas flaring” and other possible violations of Pemex’s development plan, they said.
Not even Secretary of Energy nor Pemex responded to requests for comment. The CNH declined to comment.
