What are the banks of systemic importance in Mexico?
The CNBV stressed that banks, in order of systemic importance, are BBVA Mexico, Santander, Banorte, Banamex, Scotiabank, Citi Mexico, HSBC and Inbursa.
These institutions have the obligation to establish a capital conservation supplement, additional to 10.5% corresponding to the minimum capitalization index that is asked to all multiple banking institutions.
Until last February, the CNBV had the record of 52 banks in the country although new firms such as NU or Revolution are expected to join.
What happens if a bank declares bankrupt in Mexico?
When a bank, whether systemic or not, has a capitalization index less than 10.5%, regulators initiate investigation and in case of detecting any anomaly, the bank loses its bank license.
