The Clipp demands that the amnesty be extended to all political prisoners

The NGO Committee for the Freedom of Political Prisoners (Clipp) demanded this Saturday that the benefits of the Amnesty Law enacted this week be extended to all political prisoners “without discrimination or exclusion.”

The NGO recognized that the Amnesty Law can “generate partial advances” and that thanks to it “liberations can occur”, as well as measures that “alleviate situations of extreme suffering.”

However, he rejected that possible advances be used “as a definitive story,” while there are political prisoners imprisoned and practices that he described as “repressive” are maintained in the country.

“The amnesty is only valid if it guarantees the dismantling of the repressive system and real and safe conditions for the return of exiled people,” he said.

They are considering “measures of grace”

This Saturday, the president of Parliament, the Chavista Jorge Rodríguez, assured that in the country there are “hundreds of liberations” derived from the Amnesty Lawwithout specifying how many cases or the identities of the beneficiaries.

Rodríguez reported that the parliamentary commission to monitor the amnesty has received 1,557 requests for releases and noted that the authorities They are considering “measures of grace” and pardons from the Executive for people excluded from the law.

The amnesty covers, in theory, the period established between 1999 and 2026, but specific 13 political situations since 2002which excludes arrests that occurred in at least 15 of the last 27 years, as well as cases related to military operations.

He Criminal Forumwhich leads the defense of political prisoners, estimated on Friday that at least 400 detainees for these reasons could be excluded from the amnesty and reported that it will deliver a first list of 232 cases to the Parliament’s special commission for review.

The government, for its part, assures that there are no political prisoners in the country, but rather people who committed crimes.
