With the departure of the Urbalia company as administrator of the Cerro Patacón sanitary landfill, Carlos Ábrego, General Secretary of the Urban and Home Cleaning Authority (AAUD) said on Radio Panama that this entity is prepared to assume control of the place.
“This is a process that has been working inter-institutionally for the last few months, let’s remember the creation of the Conaseo that has made it possible to coordinate joint actions, let’s remember that we have maintained close work with the Ministry of Health, as well as with the Ministry of the Environment that they are also members of the board of directors of the AAUD, if we have been prepared even before we have had to intervene in certain areas with teams since the operation of the company was bringing us an unusual delay in the disposition process, let’s remember The waste is not only collected but where it is disposed of and we were observing some delays in the service that were affecting the services in Panama and San Miguelito, today what we are doing is formally taking over the operations,” said Abrego.
The Urbalia company, through its lawyers, will file legal actions since they consider their removal from the Cerro Patacón sanitary landfill to be arbitrary and illegal because, according to the company, the contract expires in December 2023 and not in March.
It should be noted that there were crowd control units in the area that were stationed in the area over the weekend to avoid any kind of disorder by recyclers who were protesting in this sector.
Regarding the collection of garbage in the capital city and San Miguelito after the departure of the Urbalia company, Abrego guarantees that the Cleaning Authority that the service will be better and optimal “we can guarantee citizens that both services, both the collection and the disposal will be the responsibility of the Cleaning Authority, we understand that in the area of collection that we must continue working and areas that we must continue to improve, where we must continue working on improving the frequency but the public can be sure about what is related to the disposal of the waste it will be better it will be more optimal and we have been preparing for this for some time ».
