The Cintas Foundation has recognized this year with its annual scholarship, endowed with 20,000 dollars, to the Cubans Sandra Ceballos, visual artist, Armando Lucas Correa, writer, and Rodrigo Castro, musical composer.
The only one of the three who currently resides in Cuba is Ceballos who, at 61, is one of the most recognized Cuban artists abroad. She was born in Guantánamo and a descendant of Spanish emigrants after the Civil War, she studied painting, sculpture and engraving at the School of Plastic Arts of the San Alejandro National Academy of Fine Arts, where she graduated in 1983.
Among his most important awards are a mention in Painting at the Salón Playa’85 and the Juan Francisco y Elso Contemporary Painting Nationals in 1995. He has been an artist in residence in New York (1997) and Basel (Switzerland) in 1998. He has works Exhibited both in Cuba and in Mexico or the US and has held exhibitions, both individual and collective, in dozens of countries.
In addition, she is a well-known feminist activist (she collaborates with Alas Tensas), animal activist and opponent, and has participated in different demonstrations in support of the San Isidro Movement or 27N in Cuba. However, it has been her work as a cultural promoter within Espacio Aglutinador, the independent art gallery that she manages in her house in El Vedado, which has earned her the greatest sympathy among the young creators of the Island.

From there he went to the US, where he has been editor of The New Herald. In 1997 he moved to New York to work as a writer for the magazine People in spanish and was chief editor of this division between 2007 and 2022. His first novel was the german girl, translated into 14 languages. then wrote The Daughter’s Talein 2019 and prepares the launch of The Night Travelers for January 2023.
Finally, Rodrigo Castro, is a musical composer and lives in Miami. The musician has an extensive career that includes his rehearsal for orchestra Seagullin which he addresses the “long history of ideological divisions” that have marked Cuban culture in the last half century.
The Cintas Foundation was created with funds from the estate of Óscar B. Cintas (1887-1957), Cuban ambassador to the United States and patron of the arts, and has been awarded since 1963. The finalists of the contest are chosen by a jury of experts who They enjoy international recognition.
In the last 50 years, this contest has honored the achievements of great Cuban artists in different categories such as Félix González-Torres, Teresita Fernández, Carmen Herrera, María Martínez-Cañas, Oscar Hijuelos, Andrés Duany, María Elena Fornes or Tania León. After receiving the award, the scholarship recipients become part of the Cintas Collection by donating one of their works to the Foundation.
