The CDMX detains 27 people related to 23 “montadeudas” applications

The “montadeudas” are in the crosshairs of the authorities. On August 4, Ricardo Mejía, Undersecretary of Security, reported that up to that time more than 300 investigation folders had been opened and 660 applications had been identified that grant loans, make collections undue and resort to bad practices with personal data.

“Later, with the threat of spreading images, including being exposed as sexual abusers, pedophiles, or going against their families. There are 350 investigation folders in the different prosecutor’s offices, especially in Mexico City, there are 660 applications detected”, reported the undersecretary.

For several months, a new form of digital theft and extortion has been identified. It is about the montadeudas: applications that offer immediate and easily accessible loans, practically without requirements, however, the interest they charge changes without prior notice until they become unpayable. It is just at that moment when the threats begin.

According to the Citizen Council for Security and Justice of Mexico City, between January and June 2022, 5,452 events were reported. The capital of the country concentrates 55% of the complaints; Veracruz, Mexico, Coahuila, Jalisco and Puebla follow.
