Initiatives “in the pipeline”
In September 2021, the morenista deputy Nazario Norberto registered in the Congress of Mexico City an initiative with a draft decree that repeals the third fraction of section A and adds a section E to article 224 of the Penal Code for Mexico City. The objective was to increase up to seven years in prison and up to 500 Measurement and Update Units, that is, almost 50,000 pesos of economic fine, to those who commit robbery against urban furniture and equipment in Mexico City.
“The theft of strainers, in addition to generating a wealthy expense, also represents a constant risk to the integrity of the people who transit in the City, since the lack of this public furniture causes serious accidents and even in many cases the loss of life” , reads the document.
In November 2021the baker Luis Chavez He also registered an initiative to reform article 224 of the local Penal Code to increase up to 10 years in prison and almost 100,000 pesos of economic fine for the theft or theft of strainers.
“It will be imposed with a penalty of three to ten years in prison and up to a thousand times the Unit of measurement and update for people who carry out the illegitimate removal, seizure, commercialization, detention or possession of manhole covers or sewerage grids owned by the government or owner. of concession of this public service”, says the document.
In March 2022, Maxta GonzalezPRI deputy for the Cuauhtémoc mayor’s office, although she maintained the prison proposal originally contemplated in article 224, which is three to six years, her initiative was aimed at explaining the elements of urban furniture that are subject to sanctions in case of being stolen or illegally extracted.
All these proposals were referred to the joint commissions of Public Administration and Justice Department of the capital congress.
