The month of February arrived and the candidates for the Presidency of the Republic have launched into a electoral carnival launching a series of crazy proposals, some crazy, others unviable, most of which are out of harmony with what the average citizen needs. Only 70 days before the first electoral round, there are still no serious and well-founded proposals aimed at solving problems such as citizen insecurity, education and health, among others.
One of them is the “radical ultra-left” candidate – as he identifies himself. This is the lawyer Ronald Atencio of the Venceremos alliance, who until now has done nothing more than copy the approaches that the coup leader Pedro Castillo—now imprisoned in the Barbadillo prison—offered in the 2021 campaign in order to reach the Government Palace. New Constitution, agrarian reform, “fight for the people”, attacks against the press are part of Pedro Castillo 2.0’s speech of this kind.
Among his priorities, in addition, Atencio not only proposes, if elected, to pardon Castillo, but also to annul the sentences of former Prime Minister Betssy Chávez, former Chief of Staff Aníbal Torres and Congressman Guillermo Bermejo, sentenced to 15 years in prison for terrorist affiliation. In addition, he threatens to “disable all coup-mongering congressmen” who vacated former President Pedro Castillo due to the attempted coup d’état that he perpetrated on December 7, 2022.
WITHOUT BASIS
But Atencio is not the only one. There are other candidates with crazy ideas like Rafael López Aliaga, who in rallies and digital platforms has announced that, if he reaches the Presidency, he will send criminals by helicopter to the deepest jungle in the country to form rehabilitation colonies. The area, he said, is perfect because “it has a natural fence that is the shushupes (snakes).” “It is a natural barrier, they are waiting for us to take the most dangerous criminals, where there is no Internet and there is no possibility of anyone escaping,” he commented.
The former mayor of Lima has also offered an identification document for the newly conceived. “Let’s go to what worries me most, the children; from their mother’s womb they are citizens. DNI for the child from their mother’s womb, rights of the unborn child; we are going to fight for that law,” he indicated.
Carlos Espá of the SíCreo party, for his part, affirms that “he will eliminate everything that gives rise to bribes and extortion from the State,” and to that end he says that he will close Sunedu. How will you do it? He hasn’t said it.
The candidate for Fuerza Popular, Keiko Fujimori, meanwhile, rests her campaign on the memory of her father, the late former president Alberto Fujimori. His proposals are mostly related to combating crime, taking advantage of citizens’ demands for greater security, and he wastes no time comparing the escalation of violence in the country with his father’s handling of terrorism.
NO FEET OR HEAD
The constitutionalist and former congressman Luis Roel told Peru21 that this shows the lack of seriousness of the candidates for the presidential seat. “It is not just the legal issue, they are populist proposals that are born from a rally to satisfy the public at that moment. Since they are not in their government plan or have legal support, it reveals that those who propose them do not have political preparation or do not respect the guidance of their own party. The government plan must be the roadmap so that we Peruvians know where the country would go; if the candidate departs from there, they lose all coherence. If you are not guided by your government plan, which is your theoretical guide To govern, what can we expect from that ruler? That he also kicks the board of the Constitution or that he does not abide by the rules of the law? We would live in chaos and in arbitrariness; it is impossible;
He added that eliminating Sunedu is not feasible, since the Constitutional Court has already ratified its institutionality, but also that the State has the duty to supervise the education service, whether public or private. “Wanting to remove it is going against that constitutional duty and as for the DNI for fetuses, that has no basis either; the DNI is granted when one is born. These are proposals that make no head or tail,” he stated.
