The Carnival holiday moved almost $49 million in tourism

Around 752,000 domestic tourism trips were made by Ecuadorians. The average spend per traveler was $65.

Around $48.9 million moved the sector tourism during this Carnival holiday 2022, according to a preliminary balance from the Ministry of the branch.

This represents an additional 28% to what was achieved on the 2021 holiday, which the authorities consider a step forward in the tourist revival and economy of the country.

The average expenditure per traveler was $65, with a hotel occupancy approximately 46%, which represents 13 percentage points more than in 2021. The total number of trips made was 752,000 during the four days off.

Last year, the tourist spending was $38.2 million as a result of 688,000 domestic tourism trips. Each traveler then spent $57 on average.

The Minister of Tourism, Niels Olsen, assured that these figures reflect that the decision to reduce VAT, from 12% to 8%, did have a positive impact during the carnival holiday 2022.

In addition, he thanked the Ecuadorians for their support for the tourist revival and economical when going through the different touristic destinations that Ecuador has, during this holiday. He also congratulated the Decentralized Autonomous Governments for the activities and events offered to motivate the trips of the tourists.

The VAT reduction will be repeated in holiday of Holy Week. Within the tax reform, approved by the Government of Guillermo Lasso, it is established that the President of the Republic can reduce this tax during 12 holidays each year.

The economic movement was also accompanied by a 21% decrease in receiving emergencies, according to data from the ECU 911.

For Juan Zapata, director of ECU 911, the number of human mobility during the Carnival holiday exceeded official expectations, since the Ministry of Tourism calculated that 1.2 million people would be mobilized.

This is one of the highest mobilization figures recorded in the country and occurred two years after the COVID-19 pandemic broke out, whose first record in Ecuador dates from February 29, 2020.

According to Zapata, the preferred destinations for Ecuadorians on the holiday were the coastal provinces, especially the beaches, as well as the central Andean region.

In last year, the holiday of five days for the deceased and independence of Cuenca, in November 2021, is the one that registered the greatest economic movement. According to the Ministry of Tourism, on that occasion they moved $70 million. (JS)
