The Brazilian forward Martha has returned from a year long injury and his availability for the World Cup this summer, possibly the last, boosts the prospects of Brazil. “Being around such a good, competitive and team player is something that will help this team move forward,” Brazil coach Pia Sundhage said. Brazil will face the United States in the final match of the 2023 She Believes Cup on Wednesday in Frisco, Texas.
“She, in a way, redefined this sport,” coach Vlatko Andonovsky has said of her. “Her creativity of hers and her ability to turn the game around in a moment is absolutely amazing.” Marta, 37, has played in five World Cups and is considered one of the best soccer players of all time. She is the all-time top international scorer for Brazil, with 115 goals, and holds the record for most goals scored in a World Cup – male or female – with 17.
“I think she deserves all the applause because the way she’s been doing good things for women’s football is something I admire,” adds Sundhage. Canadian star Christine Sinclair remembers playing her before the 2012 Olympics. Canada tied the game late, and Marta came from behind and scored the game-winner. “She’s one of those people who can turn a game around without help,” she says. Marta suffered a season-ending ACL injury in March 2022 while playing with the Orlando Pride (NWSL), resulting in a year away.
Brazil’s She Believes Cup opening match against Japan in Orlando was his first match back from the injury. Four minutes after coming on, the midfielder set up Debinha’s winning goal in the win (1-0).
