Atlético Mineiro, current champion of the Brasileirao, announced this Saturday the return of the experienced and award-winning Brazilian coach Cucawho will assume command of the first team after the departure of the Argentine Antonio Mohamed.
“The teacher is back! Welcome back, Cuca!”, announced the ‘Galo’ on Twitter, along with a video with images that summarize the achievements of the coach, who will begin his third cycle at the club.
Idolized by Mineiro fans, Alexi Stival ‘Cuca’ is the coach mwinner in the history of the institution.
In his record, in addition to three state tournaments in Minas Gerais, coach won in 2021 a Cup of Brazil and a Brasileirao -conquered after 50 years of drought- and in 2013, the Copa Libertadores de América.
In all, Cuca, 59, directed the Mineiro in 224 games, with 128 wins, 48 draws and 48 losses. His last cycle had closed last December.
The contract will be until the end of 2022.
The Mineiro has one of the most powerful payrolls in America, with players of the stature of the Chilean Eduardo Vargas and the Argentine Ignacio Fernández, but they were going through a bad time with Mohamed, fired on Friday after setbacks, such as the elimination in the round of 16 of the national cup against Flamengo, last week.
He also suffered to eliminate Ecuador’s Emelec in the second round of the Copa Libertadores, and the day before tied 1-1 in his visit to Cuiabá, that flirts with the relegation zone, allowing Palmeiras to extend their advantage as leader of the Brasileirao.
The Mineiro is third in the league, with 32 points in 18 games, 4 behind the leader, and will play in August the quarterfinals of the Libertadores against two-time champion Palmeiras, who eliminated him in the semifinals of the last edition of the main club tournament in America.
