The Bolivia government says that "foreign prisoners" They cause anxiety in prisons

The Bolivia government said Thursday that “foreign prisoners” are those that cause anxiety in the country’s prisons and that will reinforce control by changing all prison personnel, after the homicide of two deprived of liberty in a maximum security prison .

“There is a small group of deprived of liberty, especially foreigners, which generate anxiety in the prison centers, they want local media.

This statement occurs because two prisoners were found lifeless last Monday within their cell in the Maximum Security prison in Chonchocoro.

Police reported that both had been stabbed and that foreign internal ones are involved in the crime.

Clean said that from that fact measures were taken to prevent other acts of violence and that weekly requisitions will be made in maximum security prison centers, where the most dangerous inmates are.

The director explained that currently foreign inmates “are separated” and other measures are contemplated to take, because they cannot have “locked up all day”, in accordance with human rights norms.

The official also added that there are presidiaries of Brazilian nationality who commit crimes in prisons so as not to return to his country, because there they could face sentences of “up to 100 years in prison.”

“Here we are looking for some legal figure to see what we can do with these inmates who are not afraid and that does not tremble their hand when committing a crime in prisons,” Clean said.

The death of both deprived of liberty adds to another homicide also occurred in the same penalty in January, when a prisoner was shot from a gun inside his cell.

The investigation established that a policeman sold the weapon with which another inmate shot.

Given this fact, the director of the penitentiary regime requested that all police officers not be “stigmatized” for “isolated events”, but said that from next week all personnel of all prisons in the country will be changed from next week.

“There are some that are quite a while, so we are going to make a schedule and we are going to change; starting with the Chonchocoro prison, where in a week we will make the relay of 100 %staff,” he added clean.

One of the main problems of Bolivia prisons is the high level of overcrowding, which in 2024 increased by 11 %, according to official data of the Ombudsman’s Office.

The Inter -American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) has visited Bolivia several times to know the situation of prisons and has reported violations of human rights in these penitentiaries.
