The average price for megabits (Mbps) in the service of Internet Fixed at the national level decreased 99.2% during the last nine years, the supervisory agency of private investment in telecommunications reported (Osiptel).
According to the regulatory entity, the cost went from S/24.5 in 2015 to only S/0.2 in 2024, reflecting an important improvement in the accessibility and competitiveness of the fixed Internet service in the country.
For the executive president in charge of the regulator, Jesús Guillén, this reduction is the result of greater competition, adoption of new technologies and timely regulatory intervention in the telecommunications sector, which has benefited users through faster connections and much more affordable prices.
In addition to price decrease, the service improved in quality. In the fourth quarter of 2015, the average speed contracted was 2.8 Mbps, while for the same 2024 period it reached 348.8 Mbps. This represents a growth of more than 120 times in less than a decade.
“While the transition to new infrastructure – the copper torque to the coaxial cable and, subsequently, to the optical fiber – favored the increase in navigation speeds, this increase is related to the income of new operators that have ventured into the market using exclusively fiber optic,” said Guillén.
It should be noted that Osiptel developed the fixed Internet market study in Peru: evolution and challenges, which analyzes the transformation of the service from its origin to the current challenges it faces.
