The arrival of Petro would have increased participation in the Internet and networks

The digital activism increased 20% this 2022 compared to 2021 according to the most recent Change.org report. So far this year, according to the report, 8,481 citizen petitions have been published, 1,524 more than the previous year, through the Internet and social networks.

Among the main digital petitions that went viral, in the midst of the presidential elections, stood out regulation of mobility applicationsthe failed demand to demand taxes from the churches, stop deforestation in the Amazon and promote a project or initiative from the executive so that it would not increase and on the contrary the salary of congressmen would be frozen.

However, among the categories on which opinions were published the most and there was interaction from Colombians, the following stand out: politics (29%), economic justice (21%), human rights (18%)health (17%) and criminal justice (15%).

On the other hand, regarding specific matters, those of animals, health, employment, environment and elections were the most viral.

Along with this, there were specific cases that marked a trend in this 2022. One of them was the requirement to the Registrar on an audit of the pre-count and scrutiny software in the framework of the elections presidential. Then there was the campaign that called for the resignation of the National Registrar, Alexander Vega, due to the apparent lack of guarantees during the first round of the presidential elections.

Likewise, the dismissal of former president Iván Duque as the director of the NGO Concordia de la Amazonía.

During 2022, Colombians were very active on the internet on the political issue in relation to the presidential elections. People of all parties and thoughts and ideologies used virtual channels, not only seeking concrete actions from their candidates or the electoral system in the country, but also to question or argue their different positions, thus making digital activism one of the best citizen participation tools to exercise public debate”, said Diana Durán, director of Change.org Colombia.

The study, finally, showed that the arrival of Gustavo Petro to the presidency increased citizen interactions on political, economic, and social issues. Likewise, Colombia was the Latin American country in which its citizens were most active on social networks and published the most digital petitions during 2022, above Ecuador, Chile and Peru.
