The “Antonio Guiteras” Thermoelectric Power Plant (CTE), in Matanzas, went out of service “unexpectedly due to breakages” and the electric company announced electricity cuts due to “generation capacity deficit.”
“Because of this incident, and because a group of thermoelectric plants are in the maintenance process for summer insurance, the reserve for the national electricity system to operate normally is insufficient,” the Electric Union (UNE) said this Saturday in a statement published on the official Cubadebate site.
The UNE indicated that it “works uninterruptedly to return the Guiteras thermoelectric unit to the national electrical system” and announced that this situation will affect the electrical service during the hours of greatest demand.
Failures in two power plants cause blackouts in central and eastern Cuba
The “Antonio Guiteras” Power Plant, the largest electricity generator in Cuba, has suffered several breakdowns in recent months, according to statements from the electricity company, which has caused annoying blackouts in various regions of the island.
“The necessary capital maintenance has been postponed for almost a decade. Work is now being done on the cooling of the block to inspect and decide on the strategy to solve the problem. As the note from the Electric Company in Matanzas points out, the fact that ENERGAS in Varadero is not generating makes the situation more complex,” added the Matanzas newspaper Giron.
The «Antonio Guiteras» Power Plant was out of service for several days last March due to a breakdown in the boiler. According to the newspaper rebel youth, the specialists who worked on the repair of the failure took advantage of the break to provide maintenance to auxiliary equipment.
The newspaper indicated that in recent months the CTE has generated 260 megawatts in a stable manner for the national electricity service.
