The International Football Association Board (IFAB) today confirmed the validity of the rule of five changes instead of three in all matches and decided to expand the bona fide list of selected participants in the Qatar 2022 World Cup from 23 to 26.
The principle that each team has the possibility of making five substitutions during a match, instead of three, was “definitively validated” by the IFABthe guarantor body of football rules, which met this Monday in Doha.
Within the framework of the 136th General Assembly, the entity made official the regulations that will govern the 2022/23 season.
The five changes had been introduced due to the Covid-19 pandemic when football calendars were
redesigned due to the high number of matches to be played after the first confinements.
Likewise, The IFAB ordered to expand from 23 to 26 the list of footballers that may be called up by the selected ones that participate in Qatar 2022.
Meanwhile, the evaluation of semi-automatic offside detection, which FIFA plans to use in the World Cup, “continues and so far is very satisfactory,” said FIFA president Gianni Infantino.
“Our experts are going to analyze that before deciding whether or not we will use it in the World Cup,” added Infantino, while Pierluigi Collina, president of the FIFA Referees Committee, said he was “confident” about its use in the tournament. , according to the AFP news agency.
The semi-automatic technology promoted by FIFA should allow decision-making to be accelerated to resolve plays. It is supported by cameras that are used for television broadcasting as well as specific cameras that give the exact position of the players on the field of play, which provides the referees with precise and rapid information.
In addition, the IFAB members “decided to increase the maximum number of substitutes in the match sheet from 12 to 15, according to the wishes of the organizers of the competitions,” it said in a statement.
In October 2021, those responsible for football regulations had given each competition the option to approve the five changes per team or not.
Regarding the definitive validation of the 5 substitutions per team, only the English Premier League had returned to the three changes, although it had already approved moving to five for next season.
