Havana Cuba. — November has come to an end and with it one of the most active hurricane seasons in recent years. According to the National Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), a regular hurricane season records 14 named storms and ten hurricanes, of which three can reach high intensity categories on the Saffir-Simpson scale, out of a maximum of 5.

The agency also ensured that the recently ended season was within the forecast ranges. The weather phenomenon known as La Niña remained stable, and the West African monsoon spiked slightly above normal, something that may have influenced the behavior of the 2022 hurricane season.

For his part, meteorologist Philip Klotzbach of the University of Colorado said the season was slightly above average for hurricanes. Three high intensity meteors formed in the Atlantic: Ian (September, Category 4), Fiona (September, Category 4) and Nicole (October, Category 4) caused enormous damage in Puerto Rico and Florida.

Ian is considered among the deadliest hurricanes in Florida history, with a balance of 137 deaths, the Sunshine State Coroner’s Commission reported in mid-November. With maximum sustained winds of 150 mph, Ian is the fifth strongest hurricane to make landfall in the United States.

NOAA experts have reported that the 2022 hurricane season was characterized by an atypical pause in August, with a sharp rebound in September that closed with seven meteors, including hurricanes Ian and Fiona. Also unusual was the formation of Hurricane Nicole right at the end of the season.

Despite the irregularities of the completed cycle, experts have said that staff at NOAA’s National Weather Service and its National Hurricane Center issued very accurate forecasts this season, leading to more effective protection of life and property.
