On June 3, 2018, the United Nations declared World Bicycle Day, in order to promote this means of transport, a healthy instrument of social change that contributes to well-being and sustainable development.

In not a few capitals and important cities on the planet, the replacement of the automobile by this two-wheeled invention created by the German Karl Drais in 1817 is gaining more and more streets every day and with good reason.

This healthy transport option, in addition to being free, is also a leisure vehicle. It is estimated that there are 1,000 million bicycles in the world, which in recent decades have become fashionable, revaluing their qualities. The pandemic, for example, has changed the perception of the bicycle to avoid the use of public transport and has gained supporters who today approve of its use, from moderate to constant.

But something as simple, necessary or fun as riding a bicycle can be a bad idea when there are no infrastructure conditions or driver education.
15 percent of traffic accidents recorded in Santa Cruz de la Sierra involve cyclists. This was announced by the Transit Operational Unit a few days ago. The worrying figure reveals a danger associated, for example, with the lack of consideration of motorized drivers towards cyclists.

It is not a minor vehicle, it has the same regulations as motorized drivers. It enjoys the same rights and obligations, what it does not have is the proper signage on its assigned routes in the big city. Although it is a vehicle authorized by law (3988) and covered by the National Traffic Code, there is a lack of infrastructure for its real development.

Atmospheric, light and noise pollution could decrease with increased use of bicycles, but the vast majority are not willing to achieve this goal, which we know is positive and will bring better living conditions for society as a whole.

The creation of bicycle paths in the city opens up an opportunity for transportation, but also an option for means of transportation and physical and mental exercise. Resorting to this system that is used with greater acceptance every day in response to the needs of large cities means development and empathy, education and tolerance, attention and respect.

The completion of the second stage of Biciclon 2022 is noteworthy, which will take place this Sunday to, among other things, transmit healthy values and educate motorized drivers to incorporate other traffic regulations into their extremely poor road education and thus incorporate attention due to this generous and loyal means of transport.

Among the shortcomings of this city, a network system of exclusive lanes is currently being analyzed that connects the most required points to travel by “bike”, but parking areas or safe parking are also needed, with a regulatory framework that regulates their use. This type of enterprise is only possible with a change of mentality, awareness and education on the way of living, promoting this possibility as useful as it is close and familiar.

Miles of education are missing to achieve the adequate incorporation of this faithful artifact that, from a toy, has become a necessity, an instrument and a means of transportation. It’s worth a try.
