The exports of the textile chain-clothes totaled US$761,824,000 in the first five months of the year, reflecting an increase of 36.6% compared to the same period in 2021 (US$557,586,000), the highest figure in the last 10 years in that period, reported Today the Exporters Association (Adex).
The Union’s Manager of Manufacturing, Melissa Vallebuona Peña, highlighted the fundamental role of the United States, the main market for clothing and second for textile products, thanks to the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the two countries.
In addition, he mentioned the importance of Bill No. 1567-2021-CR (Law for the reactivation, competitiveness and formalization of the sustainable Peruvian textile industry, valid until December 31, 2032), which is in the Economy Commission of the Congress of the Republic, since if enacted it will strengthen that chain and bring with it a positive impact at the socio-economic level.
According to figures from the Adex Data Trade Commercial Intelligence System, between January and May of this year, textile shipments amounted to US$ 215.4 million, reflecting an increase of 29.2% in relation to the same period last year.
Its main market was Colombia with US$ 29.6 million, concentrating 13.7% of the total. It was followed by the US (US$27.4 million), Chile (US$21.3 million), Italy (US$20.5 million) and Ecuador (US$18.9 million), among others. Items such as fine carded alpaca hair, other cotton knit fabrics and wool yarns were the most popular.
Meanwhile, clothing shipments totaled US$546.3 million, which meant a positive variation of 39.8% compared to January-May 2021, but without reaching the historical maximum amount of 2012.
Countries such as the United States (US$375.2 million), Chile (US$31.5 million), Canada (US$25.9 million), Brazil (US$17.8 million) and Germany (US$16.7 million), led the ranking of these firms. Cotton t-shirts for men or women, knit undershirts and knit shirts were its most requested products.
