Justice or political attack?
Cuevas is under trial for three crimes: abuse of authority, aggravated robbery and discrimination against two officers of the Auxiliary Police of the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC).
The head of government distances herself from the conflict by wielding the autonomy of the Attorney General’s Office and the Judicial Power.
However, the speed of the process against her -beyond the veracity of the complaint- and the decision to suspend her from office while she is investigated, reveals a political use of justice, considers Jorge David Aljovín, a political analyst and specialist in Electoral Law.
“Denying in fact a political use of the capital’s judiciary seems to me to have neither head nor tail, when we have seen that the action has been clearly concerted, especially because it is playing with the law in hand but to use it to dispossess a person who has been democratically elected”, he says in an interview with Political Expansión.
This method has been used before, says Gustavo López Montiel, doctor in Political Science and professor at Tec de Monterrey. A clear example is the removal of immunity promoted by former President Vicente Fox, of the PAN, against the then head of government, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who was part of the PRD.
“All governments do it, not only Morena: the PRI did it, the PAN. There is a use of public dependencies, partly for that reason they are also there, but in this case the way in which the issue is being resolved is clear, ”she indicates.
What is at stake in the case against Sandra Cuevas?
If Cuevas is declared definitively absent, that would open the door to a new election for Cuauhtémoc mayor. There are currently seven mayoralties governed by the official party, while nine are headed by the alliance formed by PAN, PRD and PRI, whose mayors joined the UNACDMX.
Recovering the Cuauhtémoc could give Sheinbaum points in favor for a possible presidential candidacy in 2024, says López Montiel.
