Ten days of German cinema in Havana

German cinema will return Havana with the celebration of the sixteenth week of that renowned cinematography on the Island.

The film day will actually last for ten days, as it will also include a retrospective of the German filmmaker Claudia von Alemann, who will be present in the Cuban capital.

Organized by the Embassy of Germanythe Goethe Institute and the Cuban Cinematheque, the XVI Week of German Cinema will take place from May 4 to 11, and will be held in the Havana room 23 and 12. During it, seven films will be screened, five of them premiere in the largest of the Antilles.

Meanwhile, the retrospective of Von Alemann – a director with an extensive and award-winning documentary and fiction work, in which the female perspective stands out – will take place in the same room between May 12 and 14, and will feature four films. All functions will be at 5:00 in the afternoon, except on Saturdays, when there will be a double batch at 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM.

The opening exhibition of the Week, which will have free admission, will have as its main course the film undineby director Christian Petzold, which was very well received by critics and has won awards at major festivals such as Berlin and Seville.

Other outstanding titles of the sample are the also laureates War of lies, by Johannes Naber; Precious Ivie, by Sarah Blaßkiewitz; Y toubab, by Florian Dietrich; these last two focused on stories of African descendants in Europe.

They complete the program The hitby Sevn O. Hill, a film based on true events; Chrysalis, by Leonie Krippendorff; and comedy the little fishesby Alireza Golafshan, previously exhibited on the Island.

As for the retrospective of Claudia von Alemann –who, moreover, is the wife of the great Cuban director Fernando Pérez and lives between Havana and Germany–, it includes four premiere films in Cuba: The trip to Lyon, The woman’s room, shadows of memory Y The woman with the camera. As a complement, she and Fernando will star in a conversation on the 13th, at 7:00 PM, at the Cinematheque headquarters.

This extensive day will be accompanied almost simultaneously by the second International Educational Film Festival, which will be held in various theaters in Havana between May 11 and 15 and on this occasion will have Germany as the guest of honor. For this reason, during its sessions, 17 German films for children and adolescents will be screened, along with a film from the host country.
