The Civil Defense of the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro used, around 6 pm on Wednesday (29), the new warning system that sends notifications to cell phones of the city. Residents were warned of the forecast of rain showers, which remains until the end of the night, and oriented to avoid flooded areas and to use the number 199 in case of emergency.

The system sent a notification with the title “Extreme Alert”, which made the phones vibrate and also play an alert signal, even if they were in silent mode.
The mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes, also published the message on social networks, reinforcing the warning. In answers, followers congratulated the initiative and also reported being scared of the warning, first used in the city. Then, the mayor responded with a video, asking everyone to get used to the new system and schedule according to the guidelines.

National system
The messages are part of the new disaster alert system of great danger of the National Civil Defense, which went into operation last December in the South and Southeast regions and is expected to reach the entire country.
The alerts are fired for the population in a 4G or 5G network coverage area and with an imminent risk of flooding, floods, landlords, windstorms, hail rains and other situations. People do not need to make a prior registration to receive self -protection information, it will be automatic.
The content of the alerts is the responsibility of civil defenses from states and municipalities. Thus in a certain situation of critical disaster prediction, be it hydrological, meteorological, geological, among others, these bodies may send the Civil Defense alert to the population in the area of potential risk.
Rain showers
The impact of the rains, which have been recorded since afternoon, has led the municipality to enter stage 2 alert, the second on a scale of 1 to five, at 4 pm on Wednesday. The internship indicates that there is a risk of high impact occurrences.
The Rio Alert Rio Meteorology service provides that, tonight, the sky will be cloudy in the city of Rio, and there is a forecast of isolated rain showers, accompanied by lightning. The winds will be weak to moderate.
