A 16-year-old teenager died during a riot at the Centro de Atendimento Socioeducativo (Case) in Timbaúba (PE), in the Zona da Mata region of Pernambuco, about 100 kilometers from the capital, Recife. Twelve young people who are serving socio-educational measures at the unit took advantage of the confusion to escape and have not yet been located.
The rebellion took place around 10:30 pm on Thursday (20). According to the Socio-educational Assistance Foundation (Funase), the inmates set fire to mattresses spread across the access roads to one of the unit’s wings, making it difficult for socio-educational agents to work.
The Military Police were called to help contain the riot and are still trying to locate the 12 teenagers who escaped. According to Funase, the Timbaúba Case has the capacity to serve up to 60 teenagers and, when the confusion started, it housed 57 inmates.
The teenager has not been named. The body was sent to the Institute of Legal Medicine (IML) of Timbaúba, where the cause of death is being investigated. Funase informed that it has already contacted the boy’s family and that it will provide all necessary assistance.
